Unlock The Secret To Ultimate Wellbeing At Work & Home

wellbeing at work

Have you ever wondered why some people have no problem staying healthy and others struggle? It's a dilemma that we all wrestle with, whether we're concerned with wellbeing at work or overall wellbeing in life.

A while back, I had the incredible opportunity to sit down with Damian Chaparro from Aroha Wellness Retreat for a deep dive into the art of living exceptionally well. Our conversation touched on various aspects of health and wellbeing, but one theme stood out: the transformative power of real food.

Today, I want to share some key takeaways and practical tips to help you embark on your journey to discover ultimate wellbeing at work, at home and in play. And, of course, we’ll sprinkle in a little humour - because who says healthy living has to be so serious?

Nourish, Don’t Punish

One of the most important messages I shared with Damian is the idea of nourishing rather than punishing your body. Fad diets can lead to temporary weight loss but often result in more harm than good, leaving you feeling deprived and frustrated.

Instead, focus on incorporating whole, real foods into your diet. Think good quality fats, proteins, and slow-burning carbs that keep you satisfied and energised throughout the day.

And remember, folks - kale is not a punishment, it’s a vegetable. Embrace it!

Start Small, Think Big

Creating lasting change in your health doesn’t require a complete overhaul overnight. Begin with small, manageable steps. Here are some easy ways to start:

  • Eliminate Packaged Foods: Gradually reduce your intake of processed foods and replace them with whole, natural alternatives. If your snack wrapper has more chemistry than a high school science lab, it’s time to rethink it.

  • Read Labels: If you can’t pronounce the ingredients on a label, it’s probably best to avoid it. Unless it’s quinoa. I still can’t pronounce that one, but it’s good for you.

  • Cook Simple Meals: Healthy eating doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple, nutritious meals can be just as delicious and satisfying. Remember, even a gourmet chef started with burnt toast and scrambled eggs!

The Importance of Sleep

Quality sleep is a cornerstone of good health. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to support mental clarity, energy levels, and overall wellbeing. If you’re struggling to get enough rest, try these tips:

  • Adjust Gradually: Increase your sleep time by 15-minute increments until you reach your goal. Slow and steady wins the race—or at least gets a good nap.

  • Create a Routine: Establish a consistent bedtime routine to signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. Think of it like training a very stubborn cat.

Hydration and Mental Health

Hydration is often overlooked but plays a crucial role in your overall health. Proper hydration supports digestion, energy levels, and even mood stability. Plus, your skin will thank you. Wrinkles? What wrinkles?

There’s also growing research linking nutrition with mental health. Nutrients from whole foods can help manage mood swings, anxiety, and depression.

So next time you’re feeling down, maybe reach for an avocado instead of that third cup of coffee. Or, heck, have both. Balance, #amiright?

Building Healthy Habits

Changing your lifestyle is all about forming new, healthy habits. Here’s a simple approach:

  • Focus on One Change at a Time: Don’t overwhelm yourself with too many changes at once. Pick one habit to work on and stick with it for a few weeks before adding another. Like learning to juggle—start with one ball before you add flaming torches.

  • Make It Sustainable: Choose habits that are realistic and sustainable for your lifestyle. The goal is to create long-term changes that don’t feel like a chore. If it feels like you’re climbing Mount Everest just to eat a salad, you’re probably overthinking it.

Embracing a Holistic Approach

True wellbeing extends beyond just diet and exercise. It’s about embracing a holistic approach that includes sleep, stress reduction, and mental health. Top leaders and successful individuals guard these aspects of their lives fiercely, understanding that their overall success and happiness depend on it.

They don’t apologise for going to bed early or needing to meditate—so neither should you (your boss might not need to know about your power naps, though!).

Trust Your Intuition

Lastly, while science and research are invaluable, don’t discount the power of your intuition. If a particular food or practice works for you and does no harm, trust that it’s beneficial. Stay open-minded and be willing to adapt as you learn more about what your body needs. After all, you’re the expert on being you.

In conclusion, your journey to wellness is a personal and evolving process. Start with small, nourishing changes and build from there. Remember, real food is the foundation of good health, and by prioritising your wellbeing, you’re setting yourself up for a vibrant, fulfilling life. And hey, if you slip up and eat a whole pizza once in a while, don’t sweat it. Life is about balance, not perfection.
